Is You Weight Loss Goal Realistic?

5 October 2009

For any goal to be achievable, it first has to be realistic. A weight loss goal is no different, and it can only be considered realistic if you really, truly believe  you can actually make it happen.  Once you have a realistic goal, and you add the power of motivational weight loss you have a formidable combination. If you then put in the right amount of time and effort, you should have no problem making it happen.  You can do just about anything that you want as long as you put your mind to it and make it work for you.

Putting the right amount of effort into a realistic goal is something that should be easy to do. Conversely, if your goal is unrealistic you just won’t believe it is achievable and, quite naturally, you won’t put in the necessary effort in to achieve it.  Believing that the odds are in your favor is something that is going to help you make your goal a success.

Before you set out to achieve your weight loss goal, think seriously about how you rate your chances of achieving it. You should be confident that the goal can be accomplished. If not, you should reconsider and adjust the goal accordingly. If this is the first goal you have set, it is particularly important that it be reachable. The success of this first goal will be something you can carry forward into other areas of your life. What other goals could you set for yourself?

There is absolutely nothing wrong with resetting a goal. Maybe you want to lose 20lbs, but feel on reflection that it may be a step too far. So why not set a goal of 5lbs? Think you can do that? Sure you can, right? Now, when you reach your goal of 5lbs, what next? That’s right – set another goal of 5lbs. Hey, you know you can do that because you have just proved it! Then you do it again, and again, and hey! – wait a minute, haven’t we just lost 20lbs?

The goal that you set has to be realistic or you will become frustrated if you don’t make it happen. Now, don’t get me wrong – there is nothing wrong with trying to achieve goals that are not easily met.  If you genuinely think that you can do it, you should do your best to try to make it happen.  But don’t get caught in a trap and get all hung up about it.  A goal needs to be realistic so that you are not putting too much pressure on yourself to make it happen.

Whatever goal you have set, try to break it down for long-term achievement.  Having smaller goals is something that you can do to help achieve a long term goal. As in the example above, you may want to lose 20lbs. Don’t be afraid to break your goal into small steps.  Work up to your bigger goal by setting intermediate goals. As you are working towards your main goal you will be reinforcing your belief each time you achieve one of the smaller goals.

You should celebrate when you complete your weight loss goal. Take the time to feel good about yourself and what you have done.  When you complete your goal, don’t be afraid to let others know just how hard you have been working.  Once your weight loss goal happens for you, you will have the know-how and will have gained the confidence the to set more goals for the future in all aspects of your life.

    That’s so true.
Motivation on it’s own is no use. You have to eat properly and get some exercise too. But if you have arealistic ttarget you will be motivated to do these things to achieve it.
